T just because

Got stuck with Boxhead so decided to make T and Eris still a WIP, Eris has her wires cut and bound but I need to epoxy and dress her, she is currently only a head – T needs finishing.

T armature WIP 4

The idea was to make them look as similar to my comic doodles as poss, pen colour and fine liner edge like borderlands cosplay cell shading.  I covered all the fabric for his outfit in latex and once dried just coloured him in, loving the Spectrum Noir pens they draw on tons of tings.

I even made him a backpack with his own T + Eris print using the MOO stickers I order with the comic doodles on.  I know him, so I just made the outfit up on the fly and it was a happy unplanned process, I guess his like the doodles.  His an armature doodled 🙂

BOXHEAD update

Boxhead became a girl when I decided to not cut the eyelashes down, I need to add the wire to her collar to cover the neck, finish her shoes and fix fingers, she may become a he again.  I’m putting her on pause and hoping once I finish making Eris I will have a clearer end goal.  I’m still considering using her for the ABC book but there might be a better fit.  Also decided not to write till NANOWRIMO and armature more.  I’m thinking of making everyone in Alterity from my never finished novel, as being able to see them outside my head is a little bit of magic 🙂

It’s like she is oddly cute face on but catch her at an angle and she is oddly terrifying. I like the mix but she may not be ABC book ready.  Boxhead is not a very clean make but intended to photograph and digitally edit images for picture book in post.

Been listening to some Joseph Campbell interviews, he makes my heart happy and my brain tingle, also Ozark is a bit special, Jason Bateman did good, enjoyed the rewatch even more, really like everyones character alignments.  So Summer break spent making tings because… “What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? BOXHEAD update

Boxhead

So I’ve made his/her armature, for a picture ABC book I wanted to make for my sisters twins, for Christmas.  It’s weird because when I was little I was really upset by the four faced people in Never Ending Story.  I don’t remember this but my mum must have told me at some point, I must have made a fuss and gotten upset.  Boxhead is from an idea from a while ago based of a single image of an ice cream cone melting in someones back pocket, I guess working off the notion of trying to keep things you can’t.  Turns out four faces still scare me and I like the odd but it is quite possible this little dude is too much for the picture book for Lexie and Cadence.

With no real idea of were to go next with this, I made Eris and T’s heads and have started their armatures for no real reason other than I enjoy the process, sitting at my workbench making them.  Boxhead’s face was borrowed for them, so I guess its only fair they borrowed it back.  Hoping to refine and get better at the process.

MUC reboot ;)

ITS BEEN A WHILE – Last evening the fabulous Kate T came over for her baptism by fire and introduction to make-up Club.

We had a vague idea about flash gels blue/red, a rack of wardrobe and a whole heap of wigs, Kate picked her outfit (Me (& Luke) insisted on the blonde wig) and she become foreign film post modern Femme fatale, well that’s how I see it. Planning and fabrications for the next one but it feels good to wear more make-up then a drag queen, throw feathers, wiggle sparklers and wake up to carnage in the kitchen, still with a full face of MU woops.  I enjoyed strutting like a tart in front of the camera too, these are my fav of Kate.

Note to Self – Picture Book

I built Nica and Black Bear to animate but predictable I didn’t have the patience so the project turned into a picture book, same narrative and same words, just a different format.  Greg Kitten did the honours and photographed the frames, just waiting for it to come back from print, some sample pages below.

BUILDING BLACK BEAR – ARMATURE

Day 1 – Black Bear armature
Quicker build than NiCA, I reckon I could poss make a puppet in a weekend, one day to build the armature and one day to fabricate.

The wire is thicker than NiCA but his bigger and bulker, decided to try and make him so he can walk on both two feet and all fours but that remains to be seen, he has tie downs in both his arms, leg and bum so it’s possible.

I did a quick sculpt for his jaw and had a plan for making a epoxy skull, hinge wired with a latex skin on top. I have taken to using polystyrene balls for the heads as light weight and a good shape, I sure that is a reason they aren’t a good option, that I have yet to discover (I have considered the neck to head joint might now be problematic but make make her head no removable to fix this.)  Mold for top jaw, pads for feet and bottom jaw sculpt.

He/she (to be decided) is a messy armature but I reasoned black bear is covered in fur so a little rough around the edges hopefully won’t be a problem. Looking really ugly at this point and I ended the day feel a little dejected. The last thing I did was sculpt the head, make the plaster mold and pour into latex.

Day 2 – Fabricating Black Bear
I always forget to photograph this process, should have taken more photos as I built the jaw and furred the body but you get the jest.

All Above – Body wrapped in foam build-up, poly ball head with eyes, face skin in latex, top and bottom jaw in epoxy, feet and hand pads to cover the tie-down holes and the crow look feet at the top are the claws, wire dipped in letx, covered in flocking, dipped in latex and then dipped in black satin finish wood paint.  The bottom jaw is attached to the neck an the top jaw, poly ball and eyes are all hinged above (super glued and epoxy held) with 5 1mm armature wire. Focus is off but you get the idea.

Body covered in fur.  Black bear just waiting on his head/ears – A happy day spent..
